20 amazing bridges of Europe (Part 1) / 20 lenyűgöző európai híd (1. rész)

Though many iconic bridges are on on other continents, Europe is hard to beat when it comes to history or the diversity of styles. In this two-part series I've deliberately steered clear of the most famous European bridges (think London's Tower Bridge, Charles Bridge in Prague, the Bridge of Sighs in Venice or Ponte Vecchio in Florence). Still I could easily come up with a list of 20 structures that impressed me very much. I did not try to rank them as they are all special in one way or another, I'm just listing them by country. So here's the first 10 of the bridges that might not be the most famous or the most ancient in Europe, but they all are true works of art.

CLIFTON SUSPENSION BRIDGE
Bristol (United Kingdom / Egyesült Királyság)
This massive suspension bridge was inaugurated in 1864 and spans the Avon gorge, which borders Bristol to the west.
If you're coming from Bristol, the best way to appreciate it is to walk up the hill to your right just before reaching the bridge.
This takes you to the Clifton Observatory, where I took this photo.
A Bristolt nyugatról határoló Avon-szurdokon 1864 óta ível át ez masszív függőhíd.
A városból érkezve érdemes még pont a híd előtt felmenni jobbra a kis dombra, ahol a Clifton Observatory áll.
Innen készítettem én is ezt a fotót.
Surviving a jump from this height is unlikely: the phone number of a suicide helpline is posted on the bridge.

Cahors is a small town hidden in the south-western part of France.
In addition to this this beautiful medieval bridge from 1350, it's also known for being the birthplace of Pope John XXII,
one of the Avignon popes in the 14th century.
This is the world's tallest bridge. You can already get an idea of its dimensions by comparing it to the bridge behind it, but
picture this: the second mast to the left is actually taller than the Eiffel Tower! It's an awesome sight and an incredible
achievement. I drove about 150 extra miles when I was in the area to see it, but it would be worth a much longer trip too.
Íme, a világ legmagasabb hídja.
volna menni érte, akkor is megérte volna.
If you're interested how this wonder was built, look for the Megastructures series of National Geographic
(Season 2 - Episode 25).
Alternatively, Wikipedia has a pretty decent article.
A Wikipedia cikke is elég jó.
PONT DE NORMANDIE
Le Havre - Honfleur (France / Franciaország)
After the Millau Viaduct I might as well stop adding modern bridges to this list, but I think the Pont de Normandie also
deserves a mention. It's the last bridge over the Seine before it reaches the sea. In fact, the Seine is already reaching it
because this graceful bridge rises just at its delta. Crossing from Le Havre to Honfleur. you can already see the English
Channel to the right. Its dimensions are impressive too: when inaugurated in 1995, it was the longest cable-stayed bridge in
the world.

GEFYRA RIO-ANTIRRIO
Rio - Antirrio (Greece / Görögország)
Meet the reason why Pont de Normandie stopped being the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world: the pride of 21st century
Greece (and probably a significant contributor to the country's debt :)) is the Rio-Antirrio Bridge that spans close to 2 miles
over the Gulf of Corinth to connect the Greek mainland with the Peloponnese.
3 km hosszan emelkedik a Korinthoszi-öböl felett, összekötve a görög szárazföldet a Peloponnészoszi félszigettel.

OBERBAUMBRÜCKE
Berlin (Germany / Németország)
This beautiful double-deck bridge served as a border crossing between East and West Berlin for 28 years. Only pedestrians
from West Berlin were allowed to use it. During this time, a photo like this would have been impossible to take for two
reasons: first, the Spree river was also a border zone here and was off-limits to sightseers. The U1 subway wouldn't have
crossed the bridge either: its original (and current) terminus, Warschauer Strasse, was in the Soviet zone, so the line had to
end before reaching the bridge at Schlesises Tor, the last station still on Western territory.
I took this picture of Europe's longest covered wooden bridge on the southern bank of the Rhine in a little town called Stein,
which is part of Aargau Canton in Switzerland. The town in the background, Bad Säckingen, is in Germany.
Ezt a fotót Európa leghosszabb fedett fahídjáról a Rajna déli partján állva csináltam Stein városkában, amely a svájci Aargau
kantonhoz tartozik.
The bridge had to be rebuilt several times since it was first constructed in 1272, though even the current wooden structure
dates back a good 300 years. It's closed to all motor traffic and is a very cool way to cross a border.
The mother of all wooden bridges, standing here for more than 650 years but almost destroyed by fire in 1993, is a fantastic
sight. It crosses the Reuss river diagonally in the center of Luzern, its interior is covered with more than a hundred triangular
paintings and it even has an octagonal stone tower attached to it, which was once part of the city's fortifications.
Summer brings a bonus sight: the sides of the bridge are covered in colorful flowers.

STARI MOST
Mostar (Bosnia-Herzegovina / Bosznia-Hercegovina)
1993 was not a good year for European bridges: the Kappellbrücke almost burned down and the Old Bridge in Mostar was
destroyed as war raged in the country. I was still a child then but I remember being sad that, having seen the bridge many
times already on a famous painting by Hungarian artist Tivadar Csontváry Kosztka, I would not be able to see it in real life
anymore. Fortunately the bridge was eventually reconstructed (I'm glad to add that the divers who recovered the original
stones from the Neretva river were Hungarian) and I was there to see it soon after its inauguration.
POKRIT MOST
Lovech (Bulgaria / Bulgária)
In less than 150 years, the covered wooden bridge of Lovech has been through a lot: after being first built in 1872, it was
destroyed by fire in 1925 and rebuilt as a more modern bridge, only to be rebuilt once again in 1982 and returned to its original
design.
