Amikor egy régió székhelye egyúttal a világ egyik leghíresebb városa, másfél órányi autóútra pedig ott figyel Toszkána, akkor nem csoda, hogy sokan Lazio hallatán csak a focicsapatra gondolnak, ami ráadásul szintén római. Pedig Lazio majdnem akkora, mint Szlovénia, közel hatmilliós lakossága van és tele, de tényleg tele van látnivalóval. Összeszedtem 10 helyet a kedvenceim közül, a római Termini állomáshoz legközelebb esőtől indulva. Mindössze két hely van 100 km-nél messzebb, úgyhogy bárhova el lehet jutni akár egynapos kirándulások során.
It's hard to get noticed in the shadow of Rome. When there's a region with one of the most famous cities in the whole world as its capital and with Tuscany a mere 1.5 hour drive away, it's no surprise many associate Lazio with no more than the soccer team of the same name, which is actually from Rome too. However, if you look beyond the city, there's a region almost as big as Slovenia with a population of nearly 6 million and an abundance of sights. I've collected 10 of my favorite places, ranked by their distance from Rome Termini station. With even the most distant place a mere 80 miles away, all are great for a day trip.

Even in Roman times it was already a popular recreational area, attested to by the numerous ruins of villas found around the lake. During the 1960 Rome Olympics, rowing events were held here. |

| A villa elnevezés elég félrevezető, mert Hadrianus császár nyári palotája nagyobb területen fekszik, mint egész Pompeii. És van is itt minden: paloták, kertek, fürdők, mozaikok, szobrokkal szegélyezett tóparti sétány, szőkőkutak és sok más. Nem véletlenül kapott helyet az UNESCO Világörökség listáján. Calling this place a villa is quite misleading as the summer palace of Emperor Hadrian is larger than entire Pompeii. And it really has everything: palaces, gardens, baths, mosaics, a lakeside promenade lined with statues, fountains and more. It's no wonder UNESCO has put it on the World Heritage list. |

The town of Genzano di Roma rises on the hill, while the deep blue of the Tyrrhenian Sea would be visible in the background if it hadn't formed one big gray mass with the sky on this overcast afternoon. |

The village of Nemi, which lent its name to the lake too, has become relatively well-known in Italy thanks to the local strawberries. If the location and the skyline made unique by the rounded tower of Palazzo Ruspoli wasn't enough, the delicious strawberry-themes sweets sold all over the place sure make a visit worthwhile. |

| Ismét egy vulkáni tónál járunk, ezúttal Rómától északra. A Lago di Bracciano viszont egyúttal Róma legfontosabb ivóvíz-tározója is, úgyhogy szigorúan védett. Sétálni ugyan lehet a partján, de a legtöbb vízisport tiltott és motorcsónakkal sem szabad a tavon közlekedni. Mindössze három település fekszik a tó partján, ezek közül talán Anguillara Sabazia fekvése a legszebb a tó fölé benyúló középkori óvárosának köszönhetően. Another volcanic lake, this time to the north of Rome. Lago di Bracciano is also the major freshwater reservoir supplying Rome and is therefore strictly protected. A stroll along the lake is fine but motorboats and most watersports are banned. There are only three towns around the lake, with Anguillara Sabazia probably boasting the best location thanks to its medieval center built on a cape overlooking the water. |

The uniform color and design of the houses is spectacular in itself but this picture does not show the main reason to come here. Right behind me, as I was looking out over the town taking this shot, rises a beautiful renaissance palace that could rival some in Rome. Luckily the Farnese family, which ruled the area some 500 years ago, decided to pick this spot to have it built. |

From the outside, the only thing that comes through is how disproportionately big this building is for such a small town. However, the great attraction is touring the halls and rooms of this five-storey palace, each adorned with beautiful frescoes. Unfortunately, photos were not allowed inside. |

| Ha a 10 helyből, amit ebben a bejegyzésben összeszedtem, csak egyet választhatnék, talán Tarquinia lenne az. A rómaiak előtt, tehát kb 2500 éve a környéken virágzó etruszk civilizáció egyik legfontosabb temetkezési helye található itt. Elsőre nem is világos, mit kell nézni, mert a nekropoliszba érkezve csak egy mező látszik, itt-ott apró építményekkel. Ezekben találhatók a lépcsősorok, amelyeken le lehet ereszkedni a síremlékekhez. Bementünk az egyikbe, szinte teljesen sötét volt, a lépcsősor alján üvegfal, oldalt pedig egyetlen kis villanykapcsoló. Felkapcsoltuk a kivilágítást és tényleg alig hittünk a szemünknek, amikor az etruszkok idejéből fennmaradt talán legpompásabb építmény, a Leopárdos síremlék (Tomba dei Leopardi) feltárult előttünk. If I could pick only one of the 10 places I've collected in this post, I'd probably go with Tarquinia. It is one of the most important funerary places of the Etruscans, a civilization that thrived in this area before the Romans, roughly 2500 years ago. At first glance, the necropolis is just a field with a few small buildings scattered all around. These house the stairways that lead down to the tombs. We went down one in almost complete darkness. At the bottom of the stairs, there was a glass wall and a small switch on the side wall. We turned on the lights and could hardly believe our eyes as the Tomb of the Leopards, probably the most splendid building from the time of the Etruscans, was suddenly revealed to us. |

| Kb. 20 síremlék látogatható, természetesen végigjártunk mindegyiket. Egészen elképesztő élmény volt, kicsit úgy éreztük magunkat, mintha egy expedíció tagjai lennénk. Egyik sötét lépcsősor a másik után, a várakozás, hogy vajon mit látunk majd és ugyanaz a döbbenet, ahogy újabb és újabb síremlékekben kapcsoltuk fel a fényeket. Természetesen UNESCO Világörökség, nem is lehetne más. About 20 tombs can be visited and we went to all of them. Tarquinia is truly an amazing experience, we felt like we were part of an expedition. The thrill of going down dark stairways, anticipating what we would see, then the same breathtaking moment as we switched on the lights in each tomb. Tarquinia is of course a World Heritage Site, what else could it be. :) |

| A város szélén álló San Pietro templomért jöttünk erre. Nagyon ritka, hogy egy ekkora templom ne a városközpontban épüljön fel, hanem egy közeli dombon, egy komplexumot alkotva a várost védő erőddel. Tuscaniában viszont pont ez történt, az eredmény pedig nagyon különleges a templom mellett magasodó őrtornyokkal. Külön érdekes, ahogy a barnás kő uralmát megtöri a fehér márványból készült rózsaablak. We came here to see the Church of Saint Peter (San Pietro) at the edge of town. It's quite rare to have such a big church built on a hill outside the town center, together with the defensive fortifications, but it's exactly what happened in Tuscania. The result, with the guard towers rising next to the church is quite spectacular, along with the white marble rose window that breaks the dominance of the brownish stones. |
Civita di Bagnoregio - 110 km (68 mi)

Civita di Bagnoregio Olaszország egyik legkülönlegesebb faluja: egy 1695-ös földrengés ledöntötte a település nagy részét, azóta Civita időkapszulaként őrzi a középkori városképét. Mindössze annyi változott, hogy megépült a gyalogoshíd, a folyamatos erózió pedig lassanként felemészti a sziklát, amelyen Civita áll. The name might not be well-known but the view is. Civita di Bagnoregio is one of the most extraordinary sights in Italy: ever since an earthquake destroyed much of the village in 1695, Civita has preserved its medieval look like a time capsule. The only change is that a pedestrian bridge has been built and continuous erosion is slowly eating away at the cliff Civita is built on. |

Though not really seen on this picture, the historic core of Sperlonga is mostly made up of whitewashed houses, lending it the look of a typical Mediterranean village. It feels very different from the towns and villages closer to Rome. |
