MANDAWA: an open-air "exhibition" in India / szabadtéri "tárlat" Indiában

Rajasthan (the largest state of India) offers a bewildering number of amazing sights, so it's no wonder that tiny Mandawa plays second fiddle to pretty much everything in the region. As I arrived, I first went to the highest point of the town to take in the cityscape, which still did not reveal why this place will turn out to be very special. However, as soon as I took to the streets, it quickly became clear that I found a true gem. This little town rose to prominence during the British colonial period, starting from the middle of the 18th century. As more and more wealthy merchants settled here, they started building impressive houses (havelis as they are locally known) and covered them with beautiful frescoes to show off their wealth and high standing. Once status symbols, these frescoes are still largely intact and transform this dusty backwater into an amazing visual feast.

Mandawa

Rádzsasztán (India legnagyobb állama) igazi turisztikai nagyágyú, a rengeteg híres látnivaló árnyékában Mandawa szinte ismeretlen. Miután megérkeztem ide, először kinéztem a kisváros legmagasabb pontjáról, de ebből még egyáltalán nem derült ki, hogy miért is lesz ez a hely nagyon különleges. Amikor aztán elindultam sétálni a poros utcákon, hamar világossá vált, hogy nem akármilyen helyre jutottam el. Mandwa a brit uralom idején, nagyjából a 18. században indult fejlődésnek és számos jómódú kereskedő otthona lett. Az idők során belső udvaros házaikat (haveli) gyönyörű freskókkal borították, így hivalkodtak a vagyonukkal. Ezek az egykori státusz-szimbólumok óriási élményt szereztek nekem ebben az egyébként álmos kisvárosban.

We were told the houses were in different states of repair. As we set off on our walk, we first wandered some not too pleasing streets, having no idea what we were about to see. Although if you look closely, the upper part of this facade is already quite promising.

Előzetesen annyit tudtunk, hogy a házak állapota elég változó. Sétánk kezdetén például nem túl vonzó környezetben haladtunk, így elképzelésünk sem volt róla, milyen szépeket látunk majd. Azért alaposabban megnézve a képet, már ennek a homlokzatnak a felső része is elég ígéretes.

From here, it wasn't long until Mandawa revealed its full splendor.

Itt például Kelet és Nyugat találkozik. A vonaton kívül láttam freskókat gramofonnal, repülővel és európai ruházatú indiaiakkal is.

The dominant building of Mandawa used to be a fort, now it is a boutique hotel by the name Castle Mandawa. Booking a room here turned out to be a great decision: once done sightseeing in town, there was a lot more to explore here.

Mandawa látképének meghatározó épülete az egykori erőd, amely ma Castle Mandawa néven szállodaként üzemel. Nagyon jó döntés volt itt foglalni szobát: a város utcái után még itt is bőven volt mit felfedezni.
