6 hours in NYC / 6 óra New Yorkban

When the only way I could score reasonably priced tickets from Puerto Rico back to Budapest was with a roughly 11-hour layover at JFK, I immediately started considering a quick trip to Manhattan. My fiancée had never been there before while I'd been in love with the city ever since I first set foot there many years before. After setting time aside for passport and customs control, depositing and collecting our hand luggage, security checks, transport to/from the city and a little extra time for any unforeseen event, I concluded that we still should have about 6 hours in Manhattan. However, is it worth all the planning, the rush and the money to spend such a short period of time in NYC?

Amikor csak úgy sikerült elfogadható áron jegyet találnom Puerto Rico-ból vissza Budapestre, hogy kb 11 órás átszállási időnk volt a New York-i JFK reptéren, rögtön elkezdtem fontolgatni egy manhattani villámlátogatást. A párom akkor még nem járt New Yorkban, én pedig azonnal beleszerettem a városba, amikor évekkel korábban először eljutottam oda. Miután számoltam időt útlevél- és vámellenőrzésre, a kézipoggyászunk elhelyezésére és felvételére, utazásra a városba és vissza a reptérre, plusz esetleges váratlan eseményekre, az jött ki, hogy még mindig lenne 6 óránk, amit Manhattanben tölthetnénk. A kérdés az, hogy megéri-e a tervezgetést, a sietséget és a pénzt, hogy mindössze ennyi időnk legyen New Yorkban?

This is my answer to the question above. If this view had been the only thing we see in NYC, it would already have been more than worth it. However, this was just the icing on the cake after a great afternoon in Manhattan. I took this photo at the Top of the Rock, but more about that later.
Ez a válaszom a fenti kérdésre. Ha ez lett volna az egyetlen dolog, amit New Yorkban látunk, már akkor is bőven megérte volna, de ez csak a koronát tette fel a Manhattanben töltött délutánunkra. A képet a Top of the Rock kilátóból csináltam, de a részletekről majd később.

We took the NYC Airporter bus to/from JFK. I was already excited seeing "New York" on the license plate and "Manhattan" written on the bus, but I still had no idea how good a decision it was not to stay at the airport.
A reptér és a város között a NYC Airporter busszal közlekedtünk. Én már akkor izgatott voltam, amikor megláttam a busz rendszámtábláját és a "Manhattan"feliratot, de azt még nem tudtam, mennyire jó döntést hoztam azzal, hogy nem maradtunk a reptéren. 

Arriving in Manhattan is something that never gets old. As the airport bus dropped us off at 42nd St, we were immediately surrounded by so many iconic buildings. As Grand Central Terminal was also steps away, we started by taking a look at the beautiful main concourse.
Manhattanbe megérkezni olyan élmény, amit szerintem sosem lehet megunni. Amikor leszálltunk a reptéri buszról a 42. utcánál, rögtön számos ikonikus épület közt jártunk. Mivel a híres Grand Central állomás csak pár lépésre volt, elsőként benéztünk a gyönyörű nagycsarnokba.

It was a gorgeous, sunny spring day, so we started walking down 5th Ave. We soon passed by the Empire State Building.
Ragyogó napfényes tavaszi napunk volt, úgyhogy gyalog indultunk dél felé az Ötödik sugárúton. Rövidesen az Empire State Building mellett haladtunk el. 

A concrete jungle it may be, New York still has a lot pretty parks. Though we were pressed for time, we couldn't resist sitting down for a while to enjoy the stunningly beautiful weather in Madison Square Park.
Még ha összességében egy betondzsungel is New York, tele van helyes parkokkal. Bár időnk tényleg nem volt sok, a Madison Square Parkban mi is leültünk kicsit napozni.

Just like those in London, the squirrels of New York have gotten used to people and are easy to photograph.
Londonhoz hasonlóan a New York-i mókusok is megszokták már az emberek közelségét, úgyhogy könnyű őket fotózni.

As lovers of everything Italian, we had to take a detour to Little Italy. Though it's been shrinking in size and is slowly being engulfed by the adjacent Chinatown, Mulberry St is still packed with Italian restaurants, shops and cafés. Back in 2001 I spent a leisurely morning at Caffé Roma writing postcards. Now we just stopped for cannoli at a street stall nearby.
Mindketten imádjuk az olaszokat, úgyhogy muszáj volt kitérőt tennünk Little Italy felé. Bár az egykor kiterjedt olasz negyedet lassan bekebelezi a szomszédos Chinatown, a Mulberry St még mindig tele van olasz éttermekkel, kávézókkal és üzletekkel. Még 2001-ben a Caffé Roma egyik asztalánál írogattam képeslapokat az otthoniaknak, ezúttal viszont csak egy utcai árusnál álltunk meg, hogy vegyünk két cannolo-t.

A walk across Brooklyn Bridge was out of the question during such a brief visit but it was nevertheless nice to take a quick look.
Az nyilván nem fért bele, hogy átsétáljunk a Brooklyn-hídon, de azért jó volt egy pillantást vetni rá.

We even saw cherry blossoms in City Hall Park.
A városháza melletti parkban még cseresznyevirágzást is láttunk.

Most of the trees were still bare though, which gave us an unobstructed view of the Woolworth Building. At 792 ft, it was the tallest building in the world when completed in 1912. Now the Burj Khalifa in Dubai is almost three times taller, but this skyscraper is beautiful and impressive nevertheless.
A legtöbb fa azért még kopár volt, így viszont a Woolworth Building is nagyon jól látszott. 241 méterével a világ legmagasabb épülete volt, amikor 1912-ben átadták. Ma a dubaji Burj Khalifa majdnem háromszor ekkora, de a Woolworth szépségéből ez semmit nem von le.

The first time I stood on the corner of Church St and Fulton St, the twin towers of the World Trade Center towered above me. Now the new WTC 1 (aka Freedom Tower) was nearing completion.
Amikor először jártam a Church St és a Fulton St sarkán, még álltak a World Trade Center ikertornyai. Most pedig már szinte kész volt az új WTC 1, azaz a Freedom Tower.  

World famous streets meet just a few blocks away.
Néhány háztömbnyire világhírű utak találkoznak.

A New York-i tőzsde híres homlokzata igazából nem is a Wall Street-en van, de a fotó még onnan készült.

We soon reached the southern tip of Manhattan at Battery Park.
Hamarosan elértünk a Battery Parkba, Manhattan déli csücskére.

We took a little rest here, soaking up the afternoon sun and looking out to the Statue of Liberty.
Itt kicsit leültünk napozni, kilátással a Szabadság-szoborra.

I wanted something really spectacular top off our visit, so I had booked tickets to the Top of the Rock, chose a timeslot close to sunset and hoped the weather would be good. While the lookout on the 86th floor of the Empire State Building is the really famous one, it's the Empire State itself that you can't see there. This view, however, is just perfect.
Szerettem volna valami nagyon látványossal zárni a látogatásunkat, úgyhogy foglaltam jegyet a Top of the Rock kilátóba, kiválasztottam egy naplemente előtti időpontot és reméltem, hogy szép idő lesz. Bár az Empire State Building 86. emeletén lévő kilátó az igazán híres, onnan pont maga az Empire State nem látszik. Ez a kilátás viszont tökéletes.

We waited for the evening lights to come on (that's the picture at the beginning of this post), then rushed by Times Square to Port Authority Bus Terminal to catch our bus back to JFK. Of course it was just a quick and superficial visit to New York but I wouldn't hesitate a second to do it again.
Megvártuk, hogy felkapcsolják a fényeket (ezt mutattam meg az első fényképen a bejegyzés elején), aztán elsiettünk a Times Square-n át a Port Authority buszállomásig, hogy elérjük a JFK felé induló reptéri buszt. Igen, ez tényleg egy gyors és felületes látogatás volt csak New Yorkban, de nem kérdés, hogy bármikor megcsinálnám újra.
